A group of January 6 defendants, including Edward Jacob Lang, filed a class action lawsuit against 21 Capitol Police officers and officials for damages. Lang, who describes himself as a “January 6 political prisoner,” was arrested soon after the attack on the Capitol and is accused of wielding a dangerous weapon against officers. In an FBI affidavit, it was stated that Lang was involved in the riot and has been in prison since his arrest. Lang is now trying to sue several Capitol Police officers for damages, claiming that they caused severe injuries to over 78 January 6 defendants.
The lawsuit was reportedly picked up by attorneys Stefanie Lambert and Russell Newman, although Newsweek could not independently verify its filing. Lang’s social media posts indicate that 17 other Capitol Police officers and officials are yet to be served in the lawsuit, which alleges their actions resulted in the deaths of four unarmed peaceful protestors. Lang also mentioned that Deputy Chief Eric Waldow was served with the lawsuit summons. However, these claims have not been verified by Newsweek. Lang posted a video showing an unidentified person delivering a service document to Thomas DiBiase, general counsel at United States Capitol Police, who did not accept the delivery.
Several individuals died during and after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, including members of law enforcement and Trump supporters. USCP Officer Brian Sicknick, who confronted rioters, died after suffering two strokes. Four other police officers died by suicide after the riot, and two individuals in the crowd died of natural causes. Rosanne Boyland died of an accidental overdose, and Ashli Babbitt was shot by a Capitol Police officer. The deaths of these individuals have been a subject of controversy and investigation following the events of January 6.
The lawsuit filed by January 6 defendants against Capitol Police officers seeks millions of dollars in damages for the injuries caused during the attack on the Capitol. Lang and others are alleging that Capitol Police officers used excessive force, resulting in severe injuries, including being shot with rubber bullets and long-lasting lung effects. The lawsuit claims that the actions of the officers led to the deaths of unarmed protestors and that the highest-ranking officer, Eric Waldow, was served with the lawsuit summons.
The events of January 6, including the attack on the Capitol and the subsequent deaths of individuals involved, continue to be a topic of debate and investigation. The lawsuit filed by January 6 defendants against Capitol Police officers adds another layer to the legal proceedings surrounding the events of that day. The allegations of excessive force by officers and the claim for damages highlight the ongoing repercussions of the Capitol riot and the legal battles faced by those involved. The lawsuit seeks accountability from the Capitol Police officers and officials for their actions during the January 6 attack.
