Defence lawyer claims flawed case violated court rules

The legal team for accused double murderer Gregory Lynn has accused the Crown of embarking on a flawed prosecution and breaking court rules in pursuit of their case. Defence barrister Dermot Dann criticized the prosecution’s case against Lynn, describing it as a “shambles” and pointing out 17 points of contention. Dann argued that the prosecution’s tactics were desperate and unfair, and that his client had been truthful to the police throughout the investigation. Lynn, a former airline pilot, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Russell Hill, 74, and Carol Clay, 73, at Bucks Camp in the Wonnangatta Valley in March 2020.

During his closing address to the jury, Dann dissected the evidence against Lynn and highlighted what he believed were the “lowlights” of the prosecution’s case. He accused the prosecution of making up allegations and straying outside the rules of fairness in their pursuit of a conviction. Despite the Crown’s assertion that Lynn had murdered Hill and Clay with murderous intent, Dann argued that the prosecution’s case had become desperate and off the rails. He pointed out inconsistencies in the case and alleged issues with the credibility of key witnesses.

Dann raised multiple alleged issues with prosecution witnesses, including Hill’s history with guns on his father’s farm, his mental health medication, and the death of a family member in a hunting accident in the Wonnangatta Valley in 1995. The defence team challenged the credibility of the prosecution’s case and argued that Lynn had been unfairly targeted as a scapegoat for the murders. Lynn’s legal team emphasized their client’s innocence and called into question the tactics employed by the Crown in building their case against him.

Despite the mounting pressure from the prosecution, Lynn maintains his innocence and continues to plead not guilty to the murder charges. The defence team painted a picture of a prosecution case that had become increasingly desperate, resorting to unfair tactics and inventing allegations to fit their narrative. Dann argued that the case against Lynn had veered off course and was heading towards a disastrous outcome. The defence team worked tirelessly to challenge the credibility of key witnesses and highlight inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case in their efforts to secure an acquittal for their client.

As the trial unfolded in the Supreme Court, the defence team faced a challenging battle against the prosecution’s relentless pursuit of a conviction. Dann’s impassioned closing address to the jury highlighted the flaws and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case, painting a picture of a desperate and misguided attempt to secure a conviction at any cost. Despite the prosecution’s efforts to paint Lynn as a murderer, the defence maintained their belief in his innocence and continued to fight for a fair trial for their client. The outcome of the trial remains uncertain as the jury deliberates on their verdict, weighing the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence in this high-profile case.
