Tropical storm Yagi, known locally as Enteng, brought heavy rains and strong winds to the Philippines, resulting in at least 13 deaths. The storm made landfall in Aurora province and caused power outages in the municipality of Casiguran. Schools and government offices in Manila and nearby provinces were closed due to the expected bad weather.
As of 8am local time, the centre of the storm was off the coast of Laoag in Ilocos province with sustained winds of 75km/h. Yagi was forecasted to move northwest over the South China Sea, bringing more rain and potential danger to the affected areas.
Among the reported fatalities, seven people died in Antipolo from landslides and drowning, with four others reported missing. Search and rescue efforts were ongoing in Antipolo, as officials worked to locate and assist those affected by the storm.
Additional deaths were reported in central provinces, with two fatalities in Northern Samar due to landslides and one drowning in Negros Oriental. Three people in Naga also lost their lives due to the storm, according to disaster officer Ernesto Elcamel.
In the city of Cebu, two deaths were reported but not yet officially confirmed as storm-related. The Philippines experiences an average of 20 tropical storms and typhoons annually, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response measures to protect the population from the impact of severe weather events.
