In Qingyuan, the Bei River exceeded its usual level, almost completely covering lampposts on a pedestrian bank closed to the public due to flooding. Although the rain had stopped in the afternoon and water levels had slightly lowered, onlookers came to witness the swollen banks. Despite the continued forecasting of rain for the next few days, local resident Li Yan expressed more concern for those living downstream, where flooding had a greater impact.
Li Yan, aged 52, mentioned that flooding was a common occurrence in the area, and people were used to it, having experienced higher water levels in the past. He acknowledged that while his own residence was safe from the flooding, others downstream were more severely affected. Li Yan was able to video call a friend who was stranded on a small island in the river due to the high water levels, but his friend reassured him, explaining that he had enough supplies to sustain himself until the water receded.
In Foshan, a city in central Guangdong, a ship carrying nearly 5,000 tonnes of rolled steel struck a bridge, leading to the vessel sinking and causing four crew members to go missing. This incident was believed to be linked to the flooding in the area. The ship hit a pillar of the Jiujiang Bridge on Monday evening, leading to some crew members being thrown into the water. While seven people were rescued, the remaining crew members were reported missing.
Aside from the ship sinking incident, ten people were also reported missing in earlier flood-related incidents in the region. The strong influence of flooding in the area has led to dangerous situations for individuals, including stranded crew members on ships and residents isolated on small islands due to rising water levels. The overflowing rivers and heavy rainfall have been causing widespread challenges and disruptions, with concerned locals and authorities monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of all individuals in the affected areas.
