Danny Murphy delivers scathing assessment of Rasmus Hojlund amid Manchester United’s struggles

Rasmus Hojlund has had a disappointing debut season with Manchester United since being signed for £72million, with the Danish player scoring just once since mid-February. Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy criticized Hojlund, expressing doubt that he will ever live up to his hefty price tag. The 21-year-old forward arrived last summer to lead the line at Old Trafford but has managed to score only eight Premier League goals this season. Murphy highlighted Hojlund’s lack of standout qualities and compared him negatively with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, who has also struggled after a big-money move to Anfield.

Erik ten Hag’s second year as Manchester United manager has been marred by disappointing performances from players like Hojlund, largely attributed to poor recruitment decisions. Murphy believes that Hojlund might end up being a wasted investment, as he sees the Dane lacking the speed, skill, and cleverness needed to make a significant impact in the Premier League or the Champions League. Murphy expressed skepticism about Hojlund’s ability to be the world-class striker that Manchester United needs to elevate their game and compete at the highest level.

Earlier this month, Erik ten Hag admitted that Hojlund was not his top choice as a striker signing last summer, with the manager originally aiming to secure Harry Kane. Despite lacking the experience and track record of someone like Kane, Ten Hag remains positive about Hojlund’s potential and has compared him to the England captain. The Manchester United boss acknowledges that Hojlund will need time to adapt and develop but believes that the young striker has the talent and scoring ability necessary to succeed in the Premier League.

In contrast to Hojlund’s struggles, Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, while erratic, has shown glimpses of skill and aggressiveness that could pose problems for defenders. Murphy views Nunez as having more potential for success compared to Hojlund, who has failed to impress with his performances so far. The 21-year-old Danish forward has faced criticism for his lack of impact and has been unable to deliver the ‘wow’ factor that elite strikers bring to the game. Murphy’s doubts about Hojlund’s ability to lead the line at a club like Manchester United reflect concerns about the young player’s overall performance and contribution to the team.

While Hojlund’s debut season at Manchester United has fallen short of expectations, the club remains hopeful that he will grow into a formidable striker with time and experience. Ten Hag’s endorsement of Hojlund’s potential suggests that the coaching staff sees qualities in the young forward that can be developed and harnessed over time. As the team looks ahead to the next season, there are questions about whether Manchester United should invest in another striker or continue to nurture Hojlund’s growth and development. The pressure will be on Hojlund to prove his critics wrong and establish himself as a key player in the squad.
