Daily Phrases Used in the Happiest Country in the World by a CEO in Finland

Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world for the seventh consecutive year according to the World Happiness Report. Miika Makitalo, CEO of HappyOrNot, attributes this happiness to a high level of trust in institutions and colleagues, as well as a strong focus on work-life balance. HappyOrNot, a Finland-based company that produces smiley-faced feedback buttons used in various locations globally, employs a multicultural workforce and emphasizes the importance of professional growth and learning on the job.

Makitalo emphasizes three Finnish phrases that capture the mentality around finding happiness and contentment at work. The phrase “No one is born a smith” highlights the idea that everyone has the capacity to learn and grow professionally. Having a growth mindset, or believing in the ability to improve skills with practice, is highly valued in Finnish work culture. Additionally, making mistakes during the learning process is seen as a normal part of development, as long as lessons are learned and feedback is used constructively.

Another phrase, “Serious business matters are taken care of; otherwise, we’ll be like Mary’s chickens on the loose,” emphasizes the idea of addressing urgent tasks while allowing flexibility and autonomy in work structures. This highlights the flat hierarchies common in Finnish workplaces, where employees are empowered to set priorities and provide direct feedback to senior management. This approach prevents micromanaging behaviors and encourages workers to take ownership of their work.

The phrase “‘Forward’ said the granny in the snow” reflects the Finnish mindset of moving forward and addressing challenges with optimism and determination. Even in difficult situations, the focus is on taking action and finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. This mindset encourages proactive decision-making and problem-solving, especially in situations where a clear path forward may not be immediately evident.

Makitalo encourages individuals to embrace a forward-thinking mindset and focus on taking positive steps towards their goals. By approaching challenges with a sense of determination and resilience, individuals can navigate uncertainty and achieve success in their personal and professional lives. This approach is rooted in the Finnish culture of embracing change and overcoming obstacles with creativity and resourcefulness.

Overall, the Finnish approach to happiness and success at work is characterized by a strong emphasis on trust, collaboration, and personal growth. By fostering a culture of learning, empowerment, and forward-thinking, Finnish workers are able to thrive in challenging environments and achieve high levels of satisfaction in their careers. Embracing these values and principles can help individuals around the world create fulfilling and rewarding professional lives.
