Cyan Worlds: From ‘Myst’ Maker to Building Its Own World in Spokane

Cyan Worlds, the company behind the iconic adventure video game Myst, built its headquarters on the outskirts of Spokane, Washington, after the success of the game. The company’s co-founders, Rand and Robyn Miller, originally considered other locations such as Hawaii but ultimately chose Spokane for its affordability, proximity to outdoor activities, and family-friendly environment. The city’s evolution over the years has brought more entertainment options, but also a rise in housing prices, making it less affordable than before.

Rand and Robyn Miller started Cyan Worlds in 1987 and moved it to Spokane a few years later, eventually building a permanent home there after the success of Myst. The decision to invest in their headquarters rather than spending the proceeds on luxury items has helped the company weather ups and downs over the years. Rand Miller attributes part of their success to the decision to own their own corporate home, which has provided stability and financial security.

Spokane, once known for its affordability, has seen a rise in cost of living, with housing prices increasing significantly. Despite this, the city still offers a great quality of life, with four distinct seasons, outdoor activities, and proximity to an airport. The rise of remote work has also allowed Cyan Worlds to hire employees from outside the Spokane area, increasing flexibility for attracting talent. The Miller brothers have found that Spokane’s appeal has only grown over time, with more entertainment options and a vibrant downtown.

The Cyan team is currently working on a modern version of the critically acclaimed game Riven, which will be a meticulous remake of the original adventure game. The company’s decision to invest in their own headquarters has paid off, providing stability and a sense of ownership that has helped them navigate the ever-changing gaming industry. With a mix of in-person and remote employees, Cyan Worlds continues to thrive in its unique setting on the outskirts of Spokane, known affectionately as “The House that Myst Built”.

Despite changes in the gaming industry and the rise of remote work, Cyan Worlds remains committed to its headquarters in Spokane and the unique culture that has developed there. Rand Miller values the decision to build their own corporate home as one of the best choices they’ve made, allowing the company to weather challenges and embrace new opportunities. With continued success in the gaming industry and a diverse team of employees, Cyan Worlds is poised for a bright future in the ever-evolving world of technology and entertainment.
