Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy criticizes Micah Parsons for missing OTAs

Micah Parsons, the 11th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly become one of the best defensive players in football. He has finished in the top three in each of his three seasons for the Defensive Player of the Year Award and is now looking for a new deal. However, it is common practice for players in his situation to not touch the field until the contract is signed, and Parsons has not been participating in practices at the Dallas Cowboys complex. Despite being physically present at the complex, head coach Mike McCarthy noted that Parsons has been missing an opportunity to improve by not participating in team activities.

After Dallas lost in the wild-card round, Parsons expressed his desire to become more of a leader on the team. Along with Parsons, CeeDee Lamb is also absent due to contract negotiations following the best season of his four-year career. Parsons has had impressive sack numbers in his first three years in the league, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and 2022, but falling to the second team last season. Despite his success, Parsons has finished behind players like T.J. Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, and Watt for the Defensive Player of the Year award in the past few seasons.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Nico Collins are among the few players from the 2021 draft class who have already received contract extensions. Parsons, alongside Lamb, is trying to secure a new deal with the Dallas Cowboys. While Parsons has not been participating in team activities, McCarthy emphasized the importance of being together and working on improvement as a team. Training camp is seen as a heightened focus for such activities, although the offseason presents opportunities for mental, physical, and emotional growth as well.

The absence of Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb from team activities due to contract negotiations has been noted by the Dallas Cowboys, with head coach Mike McCarthy suggesting that it is a missed opportunity for improvement. Despite his success on the field, Parsons is still seeking a new deal, following the lead of other players from the 2021 draft class who have already received contract extensions. Parsons’ desire to become a more vocal leader on the team is evident, as he looks to build upon his impressive sack numbers and accolades over his first three seasons in the league. With training camp being the primary focus for team development, McCarthy emphasizes the importance of being together and working towards improvement as a team.
