Consuming a glass of this organic slime might improve your gut health

In a recent TikTok video, UK surgeon Dr. Karan Rangarajan, also known as Dr. Karan Raj, discussed the wellness trend of okra slime water. This two-ingredient tonic, made from okra and water, is said to be beneficial for gut health. The mucilage found in okra acts as a soluble dietary fiber and prebiotic, forming a gel when exposed to water to make stool softer and promote regularity. Additionally, mucilage can support weight loss by slowing down food movement in the gut, leading to increased satiety and decreased appetite and caloric intake.

Mucilage is not unique to okra, as it is also found in other foods such as chia seeds, flax seeds, psyllium husk, and aloe vera. The trendy tadpole water, made from chia seeds and water, is another slimy drink that some claim aids in weight loss. Similarly, okra water is said to regulate cholesterol levels and act as a prebiotic that feeds good gut bacteria. While the taste of these slimy drinks may not be pleasant, their potential health benefits have made them popular in certain wellness circles.

Holistic nutritionist Katelyn Bedford explained that prebiotics serve as food for probiotics, helping them thrive and work together to regulate bowel movements, aid in calcium absorption, provide immune support, improve immune system functions, and enhance the body’s anti-inflammatory response. Searches for okra water have increased significantly in the past year, with influencers claiming that the slimy liquid can also improve skin health, provide essential vitamins and nutrients, and nourish the body.

To make okra water, cut up several okra stalks into small pieces and submerge them in water for up to 24 hours to maximize the slimy goodness. After straining the mixture, it can be consumed, although the flavor may not be to everyone’s liking. For those who cannot handle the slime, Dr. Karan Raj suggests eating cooked okra as an alternative to obtain similar gut benefits. Overall, the trend of okra slime water and other similar slimy drinks is gaining popularity among those looking to improve their gut health and aid in weight loss through natural means.
