Construction project at Kelowna airport enters first phase of multi-year plan

Kelowna International Airport is currently undergoing a multi-phase construction project with a total cost of $442 million. Phase one of the project is currently in progress with a $108 million investment that will see the terminal grow in size. This includes doubling the size of the departure lounge, increasing security screening, adding six screening lanes, and expanding food and beverage offerings and shopping options for outgoing passengers.

The construction project is expected to impact passengers as the airport gears up for its busiest travel months. There may be up to 15-minute delays for aircraft due to construction on a new taxiway. The entire project will span four phases over the next 15 years to meet the growing needs of the airport. With YLW expecting a record 2.1 million passengers this year, the upgrades are necessary to accommodate the increased traffic.

In addition to the terminal expansion, the airport will also see the construction of a 250-room hotel and a 1,100-vehicle parkade. The city’s mayor, Tom Dyas, believes that the overall growth of the airport will have a significant impact on the entire region. He points out that there are discussions around the potential economic development that could be brought to the community as a result of the airport expansion. Phase one of the project is estimated to be completed by 2026, with phase two focusing on the expansion of the arrivals area scheduled for after 2030.

The airport spokesperson, Phillip Elchitz, mentioned that the construction project aims to create a more traditional airport experience for passengers with a one-door, one-gate, one-aircraft setup in the departures lounge. The enhanced facilities and services included in the expansion will provide a better overall experience for travelers. Despite the potential delays caused by construction work, the improvements are essential for the airport to meet the growing demands of passenger traffic expected in the coming years.

Overall, the multi-phase construction project at Kelowna International Airport is a significant investment in improving airport facilities and services. The expansion and upgrades will not only benefit outgoing passengers with enhanced amenities but also have a positive impact on the region’s economic development. With record passenger numbers expected this year, the construction work is necessary to ensure that the airport can accommodate the increasing traffic. The completion of this project will result in a more modern and efficient airport experience for travelers in the years to come.
