Connecticut Republicans select restaurant owner Matt Corey to face Sen. Chris Murphy in a rematch

Connecticut entrepreneur Matt Corey won the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, citing voter frustration with high energy costs, inflation, and job losses. Corey believes that his message resonates with voters who are looking for solutions to these issues. He described his campaign as focusing on affordability, job opportunities, and opposing the policies coming out of Washington. Despite Murphy’s fundraising advantage, Corey is confident in his ability to represent Connecticut effectively and has called on the senator to defend his policies in a debate.

Corey, a Navy veteran who served from 1982 to 1987, has a background in small business ownership and has run for office multiple times in the past, including unsuccessful campaigns in the heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District and a state Senate race in 2020. Despite these previous setbacks, Corey is determined to challenge Murphy for the Senate seat and has positioned himself as a fighter aligned with former President Donald Trump. He expressed gratitude for the support of Connecticut Republicans and is focused on engaging with voters to build momentum for his campaign.

In addition to Corey’s nomination, the state’s most competitive congressional race was already set with a rematch between Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes and Republican George Logan. Hayes, seeking a fourth term, narrowly defeated Logan in 2022 and will face him again in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, Dr. Michael Goldstein, an ophthalmologist and lawyer, won the Republican nomination in Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District. Goldstein, a resident of Greenwich, defeated Bob MacGuffie, a leader in the state’s tea party movement, and will now challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes for his ninth term.

Goldstein, who previously ran and lost in the same district two years ago, plans to leverage his background as a physician to address medical costs and has outlined a platform focused on issues such as border security, energy independence, economic improvement, parental rights, and combating antisemitism. The congressional races in Connecticut are expected to be closely watched as the candidates present their proposals to voters ahead of the November election. As the campaigns unfold, the candidates will have the opportunity to engage with constituents and debate the policies that will shape the future of the state.
