Concerns about the candidates’ criminal charges and Biden’s age are top worries for voters

The most recent national NBC News poll revealed that voters are most likely to oppose President Joe Biden due to concerns about his age and physical and mental health, while former President Donald Trump’s legal issues are a primary reason for opposition against him. For Biden, voters were also concerned about illegal immigration and inflation, while for Trump, his multiple legal trials and attitude towards abortion rights were key points of contention. However, a significant number of respondents from both parties, especially Republicans, indicated that none of these reasons were convincing enough to oppose their chosen candidate, suggesting a high level of partisanship.

Despite acknowledging potential vulnerabilities, the majority of Democrats and Republicans remain committed to voting for their respective party’s nominee. Democrats are more willing to acknowledge concerns about Biden, while Republicans are less likely to see any issues with Trump. The differences in how the two parties perceive their candidates could impact voter behavior in the upcoming election, especially among independents and those considering third-party or independent candidates. These voters are more likely to cite specific concerns about Biden’s health and Trump’s legal issues, indicating potential areas where the candidates could sway their opinions.

The poll results suggest that there is still an opportunity for both candidates to address the concerns of independent voters and those considering alternatives to the major-party nominees. The ability of Biden and Trump to address these concerns and convince voters that they are the lesser of two evils could be crucial in deciding the outcome of the election in November. It remains to be seen how these voters will respond to the messaging from the candidates over the next six months and whether they will be able to sway their opinions in favor of one candidate over the other.

The poll, which surveyed 1,000 registered voters nationwide, including 891 contacted via cellphone, was conducted in April 2021 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The data provides insights into voter perceptions of Biden and Trump, highlighting key issues that could influence their decision-making in the upcoming election. As the candidates continue to campaign and present their platforms to the American public, it will be interesting to see how they address these concerns and appeal to voters across party lines and those considering alternative candidates.
