Gov. Kathy Hochul and other top New York Democrats are facing accusations of turning a luxury suite at the Buffalo Bills stadium into a private party room during a game against the Dallas Cowboys. This incident, which occurred in December 2023, has prompted a complaint to be filed with the state’s ethics watchdog, alleging that the officials abused their power to secure the benefit of the suite and tickets for private and non-governmental purposes.
The complaint, filed by lawyer David Grandeau, a former chief regulator of the lobbying industry in the state, also raises concerns about the presence of a lobbyist romantically tied to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, as well as Hochul’s husband, William Hochul, in the suite. The suite, known as the “I Love New York” suite, is controlled by the Empire State Development Corp, which reports to the governor. Despite Hochul’s statement suggesting that Heastie’s presence was related to their Bills-Cowboys rivalry, questions have been raised about the appropriateness of their attendance in the suite.
The 16-seat VIP suite is typically used by ESD to promote New York’s economy, but Grandeau argues that the charitable donations made by the officials in attendance indicate that they were there for personal benefit rather than official business. Hochul’s office maintains that she followed all guidelines regarding the usage of the suite and paid for the tickets out of pocket. However, Grandeau and others question the legitimacy of their presence in the suite, especially given the high value of Bills luxury suites for regular season games.
This incident is not the first time that public officials have faced scrutiny for their attendance in luxury suites at sports events. Former Gov. David Paterson notably paid a substantial fine in 2011 for using his position to obtain Yankees tickets. The allegations against Hochul, Heastie, and others raise concerns about the abuse of power and influence for personal gain, rather than serving the public good.
