Competition, smoking, and internet betting concerns shake up the gambling market in the US Northeast

Casinos in the northeastern U.S. are facing numerous challenges as they prepare for new competitors in New York City. These challenges include a potential smoking ban in Atlantic City, debates over the impact of internet gambling on physical casinos, and the loss of business to illegal online operations. The East Coast Gaming Congress at the Hard Rock casino in Atlantic City highlighted these issues and discussed the industry’s turmoil.

Mark Giannantonio, president of Atlantic City’s Resorts casino, expressed concern about the competition from new New York casinos. He emphasized the need for Atlantic City to improve cleanliness, infrastructure, and public safety to meet this challenge. Giannantonio also mentioned that the impact of New York casinos will extend to competitors in eastern Pennsylvania and Connecticut, posing a threat to the regional gambling market.

Stacey Rowland, chair of the New York Gaming Association, stated that the upcoming new casinos in the state aim to capture gambling dollars currently going to other states. She described competition as a motivating factor for rivals to enhance their offerings. Additionally, casino workers in Atlantic City are advocating for a smoking ban on the gambling floor, citing health concerns and the potential financial benefits of attracting non-smoking customers.

While some industry experts believe that online gambling has benefited physical casinos, others, such as Rob Norton, the president of Cordish Gaming Group, view it as cannibalizing brick-and-mortar casinos. Norton voiced concerns about the detrimental impact of internet casino gambling on physical establishments, contradicting the viewpoint of those who have seen online gambling complement their businesses. The panelists also discussed the threat posed by illegal offshore gambling sites and unlicensed slot machines.

The debate over internet gambling continues as some states consider it as a way to raise revenue. While it is legal in several states, including New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, there are differing opinions on its impact. Despite the challenges, the casino industry remains resilient and continues to adapt to the changing landscape. It is clear that casinos in the northeastern U.S. are facing a period of transition as they navigate the arrival of new competitors and address ongoing challenges in the industry.
