A rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, the comic that first introduced Superman to the world in 1938, has been sold for a record-setting $6 million. The auctioneer, Heritage Auctions, announced that the comic was purchased by an anonymous buyer last Thursday. This sale makes it the most expensive comic to ever sell at auction, according to Heritage Auctions. The comic is hailed as the most important comic ever published, as it introduced Superman, who remains remarkably similar to the character seen in comic strips and on the big screen today. In addition to Superman’s first appearance, Action Comics No. 1 also introduced central love interest Lois Lane. The copy sold comes from the Kansas City Pedigree and has a “Very Fine+” CGC rating of 8.5, making it one of the highest-rated unrestored issues.

There are only around 100 surviving copies of Action Comics No. 1 today, out of the 200,000 that were originally printed by National Allied Publications, the predecessor to DC Comics. Other rare copies of the comic have also fetched millions at auction in recent years, including a 6.0-rated issue that sold for $3.56 million through ComicConnect last year. Despite not reaching the $6 million mark, these sales demonstrate the continued high demand for rare and valuable comic books, particularly those featuring iconic characters like Superman. The record-breaking sale of Action Comics No. 1 surpasses the previous titleholder for the most expensive comic book ever sold, which was a copy of another Superman-starring comic, Superman No. 1, that sold for $5.3 million in 2022.

The auction where Action Comics No. 1 was sold was part of a four-day comic event that featured several big-name superheroes and rare comics showcasing them. The event realized more than $28 million in total sales by its conclusion on Sunday, according to Heritage Auctions. This highlights the enduring popularity and value of collectible comic books, particularly those featuring iconic characters like Superman. The sale of Action Comics No. 1 for $6 million sets a new benchmark in the world of comic book collecting and demonstrates the ongoing interest in rare and significant pieces of comic book history. The high price paid for this comic reflects its importance as the first introduction of a character as iconic and enduring as Superman, solidifying its place as a highly sought-after collectible for comic book enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The success of the auction event, which featured a range of valuable and rare comics, underscores the passion and dedication of comic book collectors around the world. The market for rare and vintage comics continues to thrive, with collectors willing to pay top dollar for pieces that hold historical significance or feature beloved characters. The sale of Action Comics No. 1 for $6 million cements its status as a key piece in comic book history and a prized possession for any serious collector. As comic book collecting remains a popular hobby and investment opportunity, the record-breaking sale of this iconic comic sets a new standard for the value and demand of rare and historically significant comics in the market. Overall, the auction event was a success, showcasing the enduring appeal and value of collectible comics to a global audience of enthusiasts and collectors.
