A group of anti-Kremlin hackers stole a Russian prisoner database containing hundreds of thousands of names after the death of Alexei Navalny and are hoping it can be used to glean more information about how he died. The document includes email addresses and phone numbers of those held at the same Arctic penal colony where Navalny died on Feb. 16, as well as their relatives. The hackers claim they are sharing the data in the hope that somebody can help understand what happened to Navalny. In addition to stealing the database, the hackers also defaced the hacked website with messages in support of Navalny and dropped the price of items in the online shop where families can buy food for their imprisoned relatives to just one ruble.

Navalny, who was Putin’s main political opponent, died in a penal colony in the Russian town of Kharp, Yamal Nenets Autonomous District. The European Council sanctioned 33 people and two entities over his death, and the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, criticized the “slow killing” of Navalny by the “Kremlin regime” as a stark reminder of its disregard for human life. Global leaders pointed at Putin as to blame for Navalny’s death, but it remains unclear whether harsh prison conditions or intentional murder caused his death. The hackers’ actions in stealing the database and defacing the website highlights the ongoing efforts to uncover the truth behind Navalny’s death and hold those responsible accountable.

The hackers’ actions also shed light on the widespread support for Navalny and the demand for justice surrounding his death. With the stolen database, there is hope that more information can be gathered to uncover the circumstances surrounding Navalny’s tragic passing. The hackers’ decision to share the data with the public underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in cases of political persecution and abuse of power. By exposing the information contained within the database, the hackers are calling for further investigation into Navalny’s death and a closer look at the conditions within Russian prisons.

The European Council’s sanctions and global condemnation of Navalny’s death demonstrate the significant impact of his passing on the international community. The accusations against the Kremlin regime and Putin himself highlight the deep-seated political tensions and human rights abuses that persist in Russia. The hackers’ efforts to reveal the truth behind Navalny’s death and seek justice for him and his family are part of a larger movement calling for accountability and reform within the Russian government. Despite the challenges and risks associated with their actions, the hackers remain committed to pursuing the truth and holding those responsible for Navalny’s death accountable.

Overall, the theft of the Russian prisoner database by anti-Kremlin hackers following Alexei Navalny’s death reflects the ongoing fight for justice and transparency in Russia. As the international community continues to condemn the actions of the Kremlin regime and demand accountability for Navalny’s death, the hackers’ efforts to uncover more information about his passing become crucial. By sharing the stolen data and defacing the hacked website, the hackers are amplifying the calls for justice and shedding light on the political persecution and human rights violations that persist in Russia. The legacy of Navalny’s fight for democracy and the truth surrounding his death will continue to inspire activists and journalists to push for accountability and reform in Russia.
