City Corners to be Transformed into Parks under Lord Mayor’s Re-Election Strategy

Reece, a candidate in Melbourne, is advocating for the redevelopment of the Banana Alley vaults as part of the Greenline project. He believes that this neglected area in the city could become a vibrant and popular destination, if plans are carried out. The Greenline project has become a major point of contention in the election, with rival candidate Arron Wood proposing to redirect funds towards new parks instead of the trail’s development.

In addition to the Banana Alley vaults, Reece plans to develop seven new pocket parks in various locations around Melbourne. The first of these parks would be situated behind a nightclub on Brown Alley, with plans to transform it into a trendy square that can rival similar spaces in cities like New York and London. Reece believes that these pocket parks are essential for serving densely populated areas of the city and creating more green spaces for residents to enjoy.

Reece’s vision for the Greenline project also includes converting undercrofts along the West Gate Freeway in Southbank into green spaces for recreational activities such as basketball and bouldering. He sees these undercrofts as currently neglected areas that could be transformed into vibrant community spaces. Additionally, Reece is committed to developing a park at the Moonee Ponds Creek in Kensington, a project that has been long-awaited by the council and residents in the area.

In order to encourage more greenery in the city, Reece plans to make it easier for residents and business owners to decorate buildings, footpaths, and laneways with plants. He also wants to provide grants for the development of public rooftop gardens, aiming to increase the number of green spaces in Melbourne and improve the overall aesthetic appeal of the city. By promoting urban greening initiatives, Reece hopes to create a more sustainable and livable environment for residents.

Overall, Reece’s urban renewal plans for Melbourne aim to transform neglected and underutilized spaces into vibrant community hubs that enhance the city’s appeal and livability. By redeveloping sites like the Banana Alley vaults and undercrofts along the West Gate Freeway, as well as creating new pocket parks and public rooftop gardens, Reece hopes to create more green spaces and recreational opportunities for Melbourne residents. With a focus on sustainability and community engagement, Reece’s proposals seek to improve the quality of life in Melbourne and make the city a more attractive place to live and visit.
