In an exclusive video shared with the Mirror, BBC Springwatch host and Veganuary Ambassador Chris Packham, age 62, sheds light on the harsh reality of chicken farming. He highlights how the consumption of chicken is linked to the destruction of UK rivers and Brazilian rainforests, warning that a major British river is on the verge of being declared ecologically dead. Packham emphasizes that cutting down rainforests in Brazil to grow soy for chicken feed contributes to climate breakdown and biodiversity loss. The excrement produced by chickens is spread onto fields near rivers, causing harmful nutrients to flow into waterways like the River Wye.

Packham calls on meat eaters to consider the environmental impact of consuming chicken and opt for plant-based alternatives instead. He stresses the importance of reducing biodiversity loss, protecting waterways, and combating climate breakdown by making simple dietary changes. Joining him in this campaign are other celebrities, including Dragons’ Den star Deborah Meaden, who rescues hens from the egg industry and advocates for chicken-free living. Emmerdale star James Moore and his fiancee also support the cause, highlighting the mistreatment of chickens in the food industry and promoting vegetarian chicken substitutes.

Actress Evanna Lynch, known for her role in Harry Potter, visited a chicken farm and expressed shock at the conditions in which chickens are raised. She criticizes the overcrowded and stressful environment in which these birds are kept, calling for a shift to ethical, sustainable, and healthy alternatives to factory-farmed chicken. Veganuary, a campaign promoting veganism in January, now seeks to extend its efforts beyond a month by introducing long-term dietary campaigns and showcasing alternatives to chicken and eggs.

The Choose Chicken-Free Week, running from April 29 to May 5, coincides with International Respect for Chickens Day and aims to educate the public about the ecological and ethical problems associated with chicken farming. The initiative offers resources, vegan recipes, and focuses on egg and chicken substitutes available on the Veganuary website. Additionally, a free cookbook with chicken-free recipes will be available for download, and a special menu offer will be featured at LD’s Kitchen in London during the campaign. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage individuals to make informed choices that benefit the environment and animal welfare.
