Chinese immigrants in the US refute Trump’s claims of building an ‘army’

The recent surge in Chinese immigrants crossing the U.S. border has led to concerns about them being portrayed as a threat by former President Donald Trump and other conservatives. There have been claims of these immigrants being “fighting-age” men forming a potential military force in the country, a narrative that has been amplified in conservative media. Asian advocacy groups fear that this rhetoric could lead to further harassment and violence against the Asian community, especially amid a politically charged environment and an upcoming election.

Many Chinese immigrants who have come to the U.S. through the southern border have shared their stories of seeking better financial prospects and escaping poverty in China. The journey to America has been arduous, involving long and dangerous trips through multiple countries. While the number of Chinese migrants at the border has increased significantly, there has been no evidence to support the claim that they are looking to build a military force or engage in any form of organized activities. Most of these immigrants are single adults, and the majority are men due to various reasons including high costs and China’s skewed gender ratio.

Despite concerns raised by U.S. intelligence leaders about China’s potential threat, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that Chinese immigrants coming to the U.S. are doing so with malicious intentions. While there have been crimes committed by Chinese nationals in the country, such as breaching military bases, these incidents do not represent the entire migrant population. China has expressed opposition to illegal immigration, and social media posts offering advice on illegal migration have been censored. The majority of Chinese immigrants who have arrived in the U.S. are looking for better opportunities and are not engaged in any coordinated military activities.

The portrayal of Chinese immigrants as a potential military threat has sparked fear and anxiety within the Asian American community. Many Asian Americans remain concerned about their safety and security, especially in light of the increased xenophobic rhetoric during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing challenges and struggles in their new lives in the U.S., Chinese immigrants are focused on building better futures for themselves and their families. They are seeking stability and opportunities to contribute positively to their communities, dispelling the harmful stereotypes and narratives that seek to demonize them.

As the discourse around Chinese migrants continues to be fueled by political agendas and media narratives, it is essential to recognize the humanity and individual stories of these immigrants. They come to the U.S. in search of better lives, escaping hardships and seeking opportunities for themselves and their families. The focus should be on understanding their experiences and addressing their needs rather than perpetuating harmful stereotypes and misinformation. Chinese immigrants in the U.S. are individuals with diverse backgrounds and aspirations, deserving of empathy and respect in their pursuit of a better life in a new country.
