Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Arizona, went missing in Grand Canyon National Park after a flash flood. Her body was recovered by a group rafting down the Colorado River on a Sunday morning. Her body was then transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s office after being retrieved by park rangers. Nickerson’s family thanked searchers and supporters for their efforts and asked for privacy during that difficult time.
National Park Service officials revealed that Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek above the Colorado River confluence on a Thursday afternoon while hiking without a life jacket. Her husband, however, was safely evacuated during the incident. The flood also trapped several hikers in the area above and below Beaver Falls, famous for their turquoise waterfalls that attract tourists from around the globe. The region is known for experiencing flooding that turns the waterfalls chocolate brown.
After the flash flood, some hikers were able to make it to the nearby village where they waited for helicopter rides out. The Arizona National Guard, including Blackhawk helicopters, was activated by Gov. Katie Hobbs to assist in evacuating the stranded hikers near Havasupai Falls. Over 100 tribal members and tourists have been evacuated since the flood with the help of the National Guard. The Havasupai Tribe’s reservation is extremely remote and can only be accessed by foot, mule, or helicopter.
Nickerson’s family issued a statement confirming her death and expressing their grief over the loss of their loved one. They described her as a bright light whose spirit will continue to shine in their lives. The family vowed to honor her memory by carrying forward the joy and love she brought into their lives.
