Charges dropped for man accused in killing of Detroit synagogue leader

The case against a man accused of killing a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed as Judge Margaret Van Houten dismissed a remaining murder charge, citing double jeopardy. Michael Jackson-Bolanos, who has maintained his innocence in the fatal stabbing of Samantha Woll, was acquitted of first-degree premeditated murder by a jury in July. The judge ruled out a second trial based on a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision, leading to the dismissal of the murder and home invasion charges. Prosecutors plan to appeal the decision.

Jackson-Bolanos was sentenced to 18 months in prison for lying to police during the investigation, his only trial conviction. His defense attorney requested probation, but the judge criticized Jackson-Bolanos for his dishonesty. Woll’s body was found outside her Detroit home after she returned from a fall wedding, sparking speculation about the possible motives behind the attack. Investigators believe she was attacked inside her home before collapsing outside in the middle of the night.

Jackson-Bolanos testified in his defense, claiming he had no involvement in Woll’s murder but admitting to touching her body when he found it in the neighborhood. Despite blood spots on his coat, he denied committing the crime and explained his presence at the scene by stating he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Investigators initially arrested a former boyfriend of Woll who made startling claims during a 911 call but was later cleared of any involvement. Woll, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, was well-respected in her community and actively involved in Democratic politics.

The judge’s decision to dismiss the murder charge was a blow to the prosecution in this high-profile case, as they acknowledged the legal obligation to drop it following the jury’s previous acquittal. Jackson-Bolanos, who has consistently maintained his innocence, expressed relief at the outcome while still facing a sentence for lying to the police. The community mourned the loss of Woll, described as a beacon in her community, as her tragic death raised questions about the motive behind the attack and led to heightened speculation. The legal proceedings surrounding the case have drawn significant attention and scrutiny, with the judge’s ruling providing a conclusion to the trial but leaving room for further legal challenges.
