Celebrating the Side Part: A Stylish Trend

The author reflects on the recent trend of middle parts in hair styling, which gained popularity in recent years due to social media influences like TikTok and the belief that it was universally more flattering. Feeling pressured to conform, the author adopted the trend, only to realize upon seeing their passport photo that it made them look older. However, there is now evidence suggesting that the reign of the middle part may be coming to an end, with more celebrities and fashion shows showcasing side parts and more creative hairstyles.

At the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, many celebrities were seen sporting side parts, signaling a shift in hairstyle trends. Fashion shows by designers such as Hermès, Victoria Beckham, Fendi, Tory Burch, Max Mara, and Marc Jacobs have also featured slicked-back, no-nonsense styles or dramatic hair with a distinct slant, moving away from the dominance of middle parts. Celebrity hairstylist Tommy Buckett has noticed clients now asking for side parts at his salon, indicating a growing preference for this style over the traditional middle part.

The association of middle parts with low-maintenance yet pulled-together looks may stem from ancient values of symmetry that appeal to simplicity and orderliness. In contrast, side parts have historically been linked to moments of transgression and freedom, such as the emergence of the flapper movement in the 1920s. The flapper’s rebellious attitude towards societal norms, including fashion and personal expression, made the side part a symbol of independence and liberation, providing a contrast to the structured and conservative image of the middle part.

Hair historian Rachael Gibson explains that side parts gained popularity in the West with the flapper movement, as women sought to break free from traditional constraints and embrace a more adventurous and carefree lifestyle. This historical context adds depth to the current trend of side parts in modern fashion and beauty, as it reflects a desire for individuality and self-expression. The versatility of side parts allows for a range of creative styling options, from sleek and polished looks to windblown bouffants, as seen in recent runway collections and celebrity appearances.

The resurgence of side parts in hairstyle trends suggests a shift towards embracing diversity and celebrating unique personal style choices. As more individuals opt for side parts and experiment with different hair styling techniques, the traditional dominance of the middle part may continue to decline. This evolving landscape in fashion and beauty highlights the influence of historical trends and cultural values on contemporary preferences, offering a multifaceted perspective on the significance of hairstyling as a form of self-expression and identity. Ultimately, the choice between a side part or middle part reflects individual preferences and aesthetics, allowing for freedom and creativity in personal grooming and styling routines.
