CBS secures 5-year agreement to broadcast Golden Globes, with streaming on Paramount+ included

The Golden Globes and CBS have signed a five-year deal to broadcast the annual award show and stream it live on Paramount+. The new agreement, set to begin with January’s telecast, marks a fresh start for the Globes after facing years of turmoil. Previously, the award show had been hosted by NBC but was relinquished following scandal within the organization. CBS took over to air the 81st Golden Globes in January and saw a significant ratings boost, drawing in an average of 9.4 million viewers, up about 50% from the previous year.

Despite receiving bad reviews for host Jo Koy, the Golden Globes managed to stabilize thanks to appearances by Hollywood stars and Taylor Swift. The event had been in jeopardy after The Los Angeles Times revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members, leading to a boycott and eventual removal of the Globes from airwaves in 2022. Following this controversy, the HFPA was dissolved, and the Globes were acquired by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, ultimately turning into a for-profit venture.

CBS was praised for stepping up to broadcast the Globes during a challenging period and recognizing the value of the iconic show. Jay Penske, CEO of Penske Media, acknowledged CBS’s commitment and vision in bringing the show to various platforms. The terms of the deal between CBS and the Globes were not disclosed, but both parties expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and the opportunity to further promote the prestige of the awards show.

The decision to move the Golden Globes to Paramount+ for streaming reflects the shift towards digital platforms for broadcasting major events. With the rise of streaming services, it is becoming increasingly common for traditional award shows to also be available online for a wider audience. By partnering with Paramount+, the Golden Globes can expand their reach and engage viewers who prefer to watch content on digital platforms.

The success of the 81st Golden Globes on CBS, despite the challenges faced by the organization in recent years, has paved the way for a new chapter in the history of the awards show. By securing a long-term deal with CBS, the Golden Globes can now focus on producing a high-quality broadcast that appeals to a broad audience. With the support of CBS and Paramount+, the Golden Globes are poised to regain their status as a premier event in the entertainment industry.

Overall, the partnership between the Golden Globes and CBS represents a fresh start for the prestigious awards show after a period of upheaval and controversy. By securing a new broadcast home and embracing the digital age with Paramount+, the Globes are positioning themselves for a successful future. With the support of key industry players, the Golden Globes can continue to celebrate excellence in film and television while engaging audiences around the world.
