CBS News poll shows strong support for abortion access, but rising concerns over inflation and immigration give Trump a boost in Arizona and Florida

Arizona and Florida have recently grabbed the national spotlight due to their abortion battles, raising questions about how it could impact the presidential contests in those states. Despite broad support for abortion rights in both states, the issue does not have as significant of an effect on President Biden or former President Trump as other major concerns such as finances and immigration. In Arizona, where there is a perception of a border crisis, many believe Biden has been too lenient on migrants, which has contributed to Trump’s lead in the polls. Additionally, many Hispanic voters in Arizona are now evenly split between Biden and Trump, showing potential challenges for the Biden campaign.

Hispanic voters in both states share similar concerns with overall voters regarding the economy, financial well-being, and immigration. More voters in Arizona believe that Trump would address migrant crossings, leading to increased support for him in the state. However, the issue of inflation continues to be a significant challenge for the Biden campaign, despite efforts to address it. Furthermore, the presence of election denialism and controversies from the 2020 election still linger in Arizona, with half of Trump’s current voters willing to challenge the results if he loses.

In Florida, the abortion issue is not enough to significantly sway the state in favor of Biden, as Trump maintains a comfortable lead in his home state. Support for abortion access is high in both states, but it does not necessarily translate into voting for Biden. Additionally, Trump has distanced himself from the issue, leading to fewer voters attributing Roe’s overturn to him. The main dynamic surrounding the abortion issue seems to center on voter anger over the overturn of Roe, especially among habitual voters who are more likely to be motivated by the issue during elections.

Overall, both Arizona and Florida show majority support for establishing a right to abortion access, with potential amendments or initiatives garnering significant backing. However, Biden faces challenges in motivating his regular Democratic base in both states, with other Democratic candidates such as Governor Katie Hobbs and Ruben Gallego performing better in potential match-ups. In Florida, Republican incumbent Rick Scott also maintains a lead in his potential match-up. The surveys conducted in May 2024 shed light on the current political landscape in these states, highlighting the various issues and dynamics at play in the upcoming elections.
