Career criminal convicted of violent hammer attack years ago is accused of targeting LA Mayor Karen Bass’s home

The content discusses a recent burglary that occurred at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ official residence, Getty House. The burglar, identified as Ephraim Matthew Hunter, broke into the house through a rear glass door early in the morning while the mayor, her family, and her grandchild were sleeping. Mayor Bass and her family were unharmed, and Hunter was arrested shortly after breaking in. The District Attorney George Gascón expressed relief that no one was hurt and emphasized the importance of holding the perpetrator accountable for his actions.

It was revealed that Hunter, a career criminal, had prior convictions for a brutal beating in Massachusetts in 2015. He was sentenced to 5-7 years in prison for his involvement in an attack that left a man injured, and has since moved to Los Angeles. Authorities believe Hunter targeted Mayor Bass’ residence as he was aware that she was inside at the time of the burglary. Hunter managed to gain access to the property by exploiting a gap in the security shift, jumping over the fence, and breaking in through the back of the house. However, his motive and whether he intended to harm the mayor were not disclosed.

Getty House is located in Windsor Square, nearly five miles west of Los Angeles City Hall. Hunter’s family disputed the belief that he targeted the mayor, attributing his actions to mental health issues. His mother claimed that he thought he was in danger and sought refuge in the house. Hunter was charged with felony first-degree residential burglary and vandalism of property, for which he is being held on $100,000 bail. If convicted, Hunter faces a maximum of 13 years and 4 months in prison, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 6.

This was not the first time Mayor Bass has been a victim of a home break-in, as a similar incident occurred during her 2022 campaign where two men stole handguns from her home. The thieves were sentenced to prison time for burglary and grand theft. The rising crime rate in Los Angeles has become a growing concern, as Gascón’s soft-on-crime approach to handling cases has been criticized for impeding law enforcement efforts. Despite opposition and criticism, Gascón has implemented various criminal justice directives that have impacted the approach to prosecuting crimes in the city.

The incident involving Hunter’s burglary at Mayor Bass’ residence highlights the ongoing challenges with addressing crime in Los Angeles and the need for effective strategies to ensure the safety of residents and public officials. The background of the burglar, his previous criminal history, and concerns about mental health issues raise questions about the factors contributing to such incidents and the measures needed to prevent future occurrences. The case underscores the importance of holding offenders accountable while also addressing underlying issues such as mental health and crime prevention strategies to enhance public safety in Los Angeles.
