Can the Biden campaign successfully keep Jan. 6 in voters’ minds leading up to the election?

The focus on Jan. 6 and the threat to democracy posed by former President Donald Trump is shaping up to be a central theme in President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Biden and other Democrats believe that highlighting Trump’s role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol and his baseless claims of election fraud will help illustrate the choice between a stable democracy and potential chaos under a Trump presidency. For Democratic voters like Frank Pohlkamp, the preservation of democracy is a key reason for supporting Biden’s reelection.

However, it remains to be seen whether emphasizing Jan. 6 will be an effective strategy in the rematch against Trump. Some voters may prioritize more immediate concerns such as the economy and cost of living over the issue of democracy. Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin acknowledges the importance of focusing on pocketbook issues but also warns that without democracy, those economic concerns could pale in comparison. Trump has made Jan. 6 a focal point of his campaign, promising to “free the hostages” from that day and casting doubt on the legitimacy of future elections if he loses.

Opinion polls show a mixed picture of how voters perceive Trump and Biden in terms of their impact on democracy. While many Americans disapprove of the Jan. 6 attacks, some still believe that Trump would be better for democracy than Biden. Congressional Democrats are urging Biden to continue emphasizing the importance of democracy, with many pointing to Jan. 6 as a key issue in the president’s reelection effort. Abortion rights are also a significant contrast issue, with Biden highlighting the impact of Trump’s Supreme Court appointments on reproductive rights.

Despite Trump’s attempts to downplay the significance of Jan. 6 and portray himself as a champion of law and order, there are practical contradictions in his campaign rhetoric. The violent attack on the Capitol resulted in numerous charges against individuals who assaulted law enforcement officers. Some Republicans, such as Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, believe that the issue of Jan. 6 has been litigated and that voters have already made up their minds about it. Others, like California Rep. Mike Garcia, argue that Biden’s focus on Jan. 6 is an indication of his failure to accomplish policy goals during his presidency.

As the 2024 election approaches, the Biden campaign is committed to defending democracy and highlighting the dangers posed by Trump’s continued denial of the election results. The clashes between Trump supporters and law enforcement on Jan. 6 have raised questions about Trump’s commitment to law and order, despite his attempts to portray himself as tough on crime. Ultimately, the legacy of Jan. 6 and the battle for the future of American democracy will continue to shape the political landscape in the lead-up to the election.
