Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Meta’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis recently discussed the “Know 2 Protect” campaign on CBS News. The campaign is designed to provide parents and young people with information on how to prevent exploitation and abuse online, how to report incidents, and where to find resources for victims and survivors.

Mayorkas emphasized the importance of educating both parents and children about online safety. He highlighted the need for families to have open and ongoing conversations about potential risks on the internet, as well as the steps they can take to stay safe. Davis added that while technology can be a powerful tool for learning and connection, it can also be misused, making it essential for everyone to be vigilant and informed.

The “Know 2 Protect” campaign aims to empower individuals to recognize warning signs of online exploitation and abuse, such as sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal from social activities, or receiving gifts or money from unknown sources. By providing clear guidelines on reporting suspicious behavior and accessing support services, the campaign seeks to create a safer online environment for all users, especially young people who may be more vulnerable to online threats.

Mayorkas highlighted the role of social media platforms in promoting online safety, stating that companies like Meta have a responsibility to implement robust safety measures and provide users with the tools they need to protect themselves. Davis emphasized Meta’s commitment to partnership and collaboration with law enforcement agencies, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to address online harms and ensure the well-being of all users on their platforms.

Both Mayorkas and Davis acknowledged that keeping children safe online is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between government agencies, tech companies, educators, parents, and the wider community. By raising awareness about the risks of online exploitation and abuse, providing resources for victims and survivors, and promoting responsible online behavior, the “Know 2 Protect” campaign seeks to mobilize a collective effort to protect young people from harm in the digital world.

In conclusion, Secretary Mayorkas and Meta’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis highlighted the urgent need for greater awareness and action to address online threats facing children and youth. Through the “Know 2 Protect” campaign and other initiatives, they aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the digital landscape safely and advocate for a safer, more secure online environment for all. By working together and fostering a culture of vigilance and accountability, they hope to prevent online exploitation and abuse and support those who have been affected by these harmful behaviors.
