California man facing charges for allegedly using ‘weapon of mass destruction’ in courthouse blast

Nathaniel McGuire, a 20-year-old California man, is facing new federal charges after being arrested in a courthouse bomb attack that injured five people last month. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles has charged McGuire with using a weapon of mass destruction, maliciously damaging a building with an explosive, and possessing unregistered destructive devices. McGuire was arrested on September 25 after throwing a bag with explosives into the lobby of a courthouse in Santa Maria. He had reportedly planned to kill deputies and a judge in the building and had an outburst during his arraignment, leading to a mental health evaluation.

McGuire is expected to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on Friday, with federal public defender Iboh Umodu representing him. McGuire had been arrested in July on suspicion of illegal gun possession and was about to be arraigned at the Santa Maria Courthouse when the explosion occurred. Law enforcement found ammunition, weapons, and explosives in McGuire’s car, along with materials for creating explosive devices at his home. McGuire told law enforcement that he had planned to kill deputies and a judge at the courthouse and had intentions to return to his car to get more weapons.

Federal authorities have charged McGuire with additional counts, including attempted murder, use of an explosive device with the intent to murder, carrying a loaded firearm, and arson of forest land in connection with fires on the outskirts of Santa Maria. United States Attorney Martin Estrada emphasized the seriousness of the charges and the office’s determination to hold accountable those who seek to bring violence upon courts, law enforcement personnel, and the public. McGuire has not entered a plea and has been in custody since his arrest in September.

The incident at the Santa Maria Courthouse has raised concerns about security measures in public buildings, especially in light of McGuire’s planned attack. The details of the case, including McGuire’s possession of weapons and explosives, as well as his intentions to cause harm to law enforcement and judicial officials, highlight the potential threats that individuals may pose. Authorities are likely to conduct a thorough investigation into the motives behind McGuire’s actions and any potential connections to larger domestic terrorism threats.

As McGuire’s case proceeds in federal and state courts, there will be a focus on ensuring the safety and security of courthouses and public spaces. The charges against McGuire, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction, demonstrate the severity of the potential harm that could have been caused by his actions. The legal process will play out as prosecutors seek to hold McGuire accountable for his alleged crimes and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The case serves as a reminder of the vigilance required in identifying and addressing threats to public safety and the justice system.
