Brightline West has announced new locations for field investigation work being conducted as part of the construction of a planned high-speed rail line in California and Nevada. The 218-mile route, running from Rancho Cucamonga, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada, officially broke ground in April, with work now being carried out at various investigational sites along Interstate 15. Motorists in the area were advised to proceed with extra caution due to the ongoing construction activities, which include land surveying, geotechnical borings, and samplings. Some closures of freeway shoulders and lanes will be required during the day and possibly at night to minimize disruption to traffic.
The company announced three updated investigational sites, including one at I-15’s point of entry to Halloran Road in California and another on I-15 from Oak Hill Road to Foot Hill Boulevard in California. Work is also scheduled to take place on I-15 in Primm, Nevada, at milepost 5-12.5. The schedule for these activities is subject to change and may be weather-dependent. Brightline West plans to open the high-speed rail line from Southern California to Las Vegas in 2028, coinciding with the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The rail line is expected to be the country’s first true high-speed passenger rail system, with trains capable of speeds up to 200 mph, similar to Japan’s bullet trains.
While current construction plans only include stations in Rancho Cucamonga, Las Vegas, and Victor Valley, California, there is potential for expansion in the future. The station in Rancho Cucamonga, located in the Inland Empire area, currently connects to a commuter rail service that extends to Los Angeles. Brightline West already operates high-speed trains in Florida, connecting Miami and Orlando with a maximum speed of 125 mph. Plans for U.S. high-speed rail lines have been increasing, with proposed projects in California, Texas, and the southeast. The Biden administration has allocated over $8 billion in funding for passenger rail services, including high-speed rail projects, marking a significant investment in rail infrastructure in the country.
