Caddie for Scheffler to Miss PGA Event to Support Daughter at Graduation

Scottie Scheffler prioritized family over golf during the PGA Championship when he allowed his caddie, Ted Scott, to attend his daughter’s high school graduation. Brad Payne, a chaplain on tour, stepped in to caddie for Scheffler while Scott was away. This decision was an easy one for Scheffler, who recently became a father himself. Scheffler’s friend and fellow golfer, Jordan Spieth, emphasized that players are not the sole decision-makers in discussions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, refuting claims that players hold excessive power in these negotiations.

Max Homa, still searching for his first major title, is now also in contention for a spot on the U.S. Olympics golf team. Homa, along with Patrick Cantlay and Brian Harman, is competing for the fourth spot on the team, provided they are in the top 15 in the world golf ranking. Homa’s recent strong performances have boosted his chances of representing the U.S. in Paris. Similarly, Justin Thomas, a two-time PGA champion, is an investor in English club Leeds United and plans to watch their match after his morning start at Valhalla. Thomas and fellow investor Jordan Spieth have gained insight on the team from conversations with caddie Billy Foster.

Spieth and Thomas both dismissed the idea that players hold excessive power in golf, emphasizing the need for a variety of perspectives in negotiations. While some have raised concerns about the influence players have in these discussions, Spieth believes that the situation is positive overall. Thomas, a soccer enthusiast as well as a golfer, is looking forward to watching Leeds United’s match and is excited to see how the team performs. His involvement with Leeds has allowed him to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sport, and he is eager to see the team in action at their home stadium.

The PGA Championship provided a platform for players like Scheffler, Homa, and Thomas to showcase their talents and interests outside of golf. Despite the pressures of competition, they were able to balance their personal lives with their professional commitments. Scheffler’s decision to prioritize family, Homa’s pursuit of both a major title and an Olympic opportunity, and Thomas’ involvement in soccer investments highlight the diverse interests and experiences of professional golfers. By engaging in different activities and investments, these players demonstrate the multifaceted nature of their lives beyond the golf course.
