Brother sentenced to jail for “entirely unnecessary” murder of sister’s former partner he encountered in her yard

Liam Fosbrook, 29, was sentenced to seven years in prison for the manslaughter of his sister’s ex-partner, Dylan Towers, 35. The incident occurred in December 2021 when Towers appeared at Fosbrook’s sister’s home in Stockport, despite being banned from contacting her. Fosbrook confronted Towers in the backyard with two kitchen knives and stabbed him multiple times, causing him to succumb to his injuries in the hospital days later. The situation stemmed from Towers’ persistent harassment of Fosbrook’s sister, leading to exclusion orders and a domestic violence protection order against him.

Fosbrook had previously been cleared of murder but was found guilty of manslaughter in a retrial. The court heard that Towers had been harassing Fosbrook’s sister, leading to multiple breaches of the exclusion order. Fosbrook had been staying at his sister’s house to protect her after social services removed her children due to concerns about her well-being. Despite being advised by police to stay indoors if Towers returned, Fosbrook confronted Towers in the backyard, leading to the fatal altercation. The jury rejected the defense of self-defense, indicating that Fosbrook’s actions were not justified.

The judge noted that Fosbrook had laid out kitchen knives strategically in the house before confronting Towers, indicating premeditation. Fosbrook’s actions were deemed disproportionate and unnecessary, leading to Towers’ tragic death. The court heard that Fosbrook took no steps to help Towers, despite inflicting serious injuries. DNA evidence from the knives found at the scene implicated Fosbrook in the stabbing. The defense argued that Towers was unwelcome, and Fosbrook was acting out of fear and concern for his sister’s safety and his own.

The incident shed light on the complexities of domestic violence situations and the challenges faced by victims and their families. Fosbrook’s actions, while stemming from a desire to protect his sister, ultimately resulted in a tragic loss of life. The case highlighted the impact of harassment and domestic violence on victims and their loved ones, emphasizing the need for effective support systems and legal protections. Fosbrook’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of taking the law into one’s own hands and the importance of seeking help and following legal procedures in such situations.

Fosbrook’s sentencing included a minimum of two-thirds of his seven-year jail term before he can be considered for parole. The judge emphasized that Fosbrook’s actions were driven by impatience and unnecessary force, leading to the death of Towers. The case underscored the necessity of addressing issues of domestic violence and harassment through legal channels and support services. Fosbrook’s sentencing serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of taking matters into one’s own hands and the tragic outcomes that can result from such actions.
