The recent NFL draft in Detroit made history with the Denver Broncos selecting Oregon quarterback Bo Nix as the sixth QB in the first round, the lowest number of signal-callers taken in the first round in NFL Draft history. Nix will have to prove himself as the quarterback of the future in his first year with the team, or he may need time to develop in Payton’s system. Nix started his collegiate career at Auburn before transferring to Oregon in 2022, where he had a breakout season in 2023 with 4,509 yards, 45 touchdowns, and a 77.4% completion rate. The Broncos hope Nix can continue playing at this level and will have weapons like Courtland Sutton and Josh Reynolds to work with.
Before Nix can establish connections with his new teammates, he will need to win the quarterback competition in Denver. The team may also bring in more offensive firepower through later draft picks.
