Drag queen Barbada De Barbades recently performed at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for a musical drag story hour, accompanied by music from the Metropolitan Orchestra. The performance, which took place on the museum’s Bourgie Hall stage, featured a spring-themed show that captivated the audience. This event was the second installment of a three-part collaboration between Barbada and the orchestra. According to Bourgie Hall artistic director Olivier Godin, combining drag, storytelling, and music is a natural fit that can create a spectacular and beautiful experience for all ages.

Mixing different art forms like drag with classical music is not a new concept, according to Godin and Fabienne Voisin, CEO of the Metropolitan Orchestra. These types of performances offer a unique opportunity to present classical music in a fun and entertaining way, making it more accessible to a wider audience. Voisin emphasized that the collaboration with Barbada showcases the versatility and enjoyment of classical music. Despite facing security concerns that led to the cancellation of some events, Barbada expressed gratitude and emotion for the opportunity to perform on a prestigious stage with such a renowned orchestra.

The response from the audience and organizers to Barbada’s performance at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been overwhelmingly positive. The unique combination of drag, storytelling, and classical music has resonated with viewers of all ages and backgrounds, highlighting the power of creativity and collaboration in the arts. Barbada’s ability to bring these different elements together in a cohesive and engaging way has garnered attention and praise, showcasing the importance of diversity and inclusion in the arts community.

The upcoming third and final show in the collaboration between Barbada and the Metropolitan Orchestra is scheduled for June 2 of this year. This event promises to build upon the success of the previous performances, offering audiences another opportunity to experience the magic of drag storytelling accompanied by live orchestral music in a prestigious setting. The ongoing partnership between Barbada, the orchestra, and the museum reflects a commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities in the arts, while also celebrating the diversity and creativity of Montreal’s cultural scene.

Overall, Barbada De Barbades’ performance at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts exemplifies the power of collaboration, creativity, and inclusivity in the arts. By bringing together drag, storytelling, and classical music, Barbada has created a unique and engaging experience that transcends traditional boundaries and captivates audiences of all ages. Through this collaboration, Barbada and the Metropolitan Orchestra have successfully showcased the accessibility and versatility of classical music, while also celebrating the artistry and talent of the drag community. The positive response to these performances underscores the importance of embracing diversity and pushing creative boundaries in order to create unforgettable and transformative cultural experiences.
