Rick Slayman, a 62-year-old man who recently underwent the world’s first pig kidney transplant, has been released from Massachusetts General Hospital after nearly two weeks of recovery. Slayman expressed his gratitude towards the doctors and nurses who cared for him, stating that his health has never been better. He looks forward to resuming his life without the burden of dialysis, which has affected his quality of life for many years.

The transplant, which took place on March 21, was a groundbreaking procedure as it was the first time a pig kidney was transplanted into a living human patient. Slayman, who was living with end-stage kidney disease, Type 2 diabetes, and hypertension, had previously received a human kidney transplant in 2018, but it began failing five years later. The pig kidney used in the transplant was donated by eGenesis in Cambridge and was genetically edited to remove harmful pig genes while incorporating certain human genes to enhance compatibility.

Slayman’s recovery is progressing smoothly, and he expressed his gratitude towards those who sent him well-wishes, including patients awaiting kidney transplants. He believes that his successful transplant marks a new beginning not only for himself but for others in need of organ transplants. Slayman is excited to return home to Weymouth and spend time with his family, friends, and loved ones, free from the constraints of dialysis.

The care Slayman received at Massachusetts General Hospital was exceptional, and he expressed his trust in the physicians of the Mass General Brigham health system with his life. He acknowledged the impact that the transplant has had on his quality of life and looks forward to resuming his activities without the limitations imposed by his medical conditions. The successful outcome of the world’s first pig kidney transplant reflects the advancements in medical technology and the potential for future organ transplants to improve the lives of patients in need.

Slayman’s journey from living with end-stage kidney disease to receiving a groundbreaking pig kidney transplant showcases the transformative impact of medical innovation on the lives of patients. As he returns home to continue his recovery, Slayman’s story serves as a beacon of hope for those awaiting organ transplants. The successful outcome of this pioneering procedure highlights the collaborative efforts of medical professionals, researchers, and organ donors in revolutionizing the field of organ transplantation and offering new possibilities for patients facing life-threatening conditions.
