Bolivian general arrested following apparent failed coup attempt, adding to government’s new crisis

A tumultuous day unfolded in Bolivia as an attempted coup was thwarted by President Luis Arce. The crisis was initiated by a top general leading the rebellion, sparking chaos and confusion in the South American nation facing political turmoil and economic struggles. However, after just three hours, the soldiers retreated, and the situation seemed to be under control. Arce stood firm against the attempt, naming a new army commander and declaring that the troops should stand down, which ultimately led to the end of the rebellion.

The soldiers’ retreat was quickly followed by the arrest of army chief Gen. Juan José Zúñiga and former navy Vice Adm. Juan Arnez Salvador. The government minister condemned their actions as an attempt to overturn the democratically elected authority. Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo reassured the public that the situation was under control, emphasizing that Bolivia had experienced a failed coup. The events occurred amidst ongoing tensions between Arce and former president Evo Morales, complicating the government’s ability to address the economic crisis.

General Zúñiga cited political infighting and a desire to restore democracy as reasons for the rebellion. He alleged that President Arce instructed him to storm the palace for political gain, a claim vehemently denied by the government. The dramatic confrontation between Arce and Zúñiga highlighted the severity of the crisis, reminiscent of the political upheaval that led to Morales’ ousting in 2019. The president’s swift response to the coup attempt included appointing new military leaders and calling for the mobilized troops to return to their units, denouncing the actions of the rebels.

The spectacle of the attempted coup shocked the nation and drew condemnation from regional leaders and organizations. The Organization of American States, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, and other Latin American figures expressed concern and urged support for Bolivia’s democratic institutions. Analysts emphasized the importance of condemning such actions to prevent a similar destabilization in other countries. The violent incident escalated tensions in a country already grappling with protests, economic decline, and internal power struggles within the ruling party.

Amidst reports of citizens stockpiling essentials in fear of further unrest, Vice President David Choquehuanca reassured the Bolivian people that such attempts at undermining democracy would not be tolerated. The aftermath of the failed coup underlined the fragility of Bolivia’s political landscape and the challenges ahead in addressing the economic crisis and maintaining stability. Arce’s steadfast response to the rebellion, the immediate arrests of those involved, and the appointment of new military heads aimed to restore confidence in the government and reassure the public of its commitment to upholding democratic principles.

As Bolivia navigates through the aftermath of the attempted coup, the episode serves as a stark reminder of the country’s turbulent history of political upheavals. The resilience of its democratic institutions and the unity displayed by various political figures in defending the legitimate government offer hope for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Moving forward, Bolivia will need to address the underlying issues that led to the rebellion, including economic hardships, political divisions, and power struggles within the ruling party. The events of this tumultuous day underscore the importance of upholding democratic norms and the rule of law to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the nation.
