Blizzard and NetEase reach agreement, ‘World of Warcraft’ and other popular games to resume in China following resolution of dispute

Chinese gaming giant NetEase and California-based Blizzard Entertainment have announced the return of popular video games like “World of Warcraft” and “Hearthstone” to the Chinese market after ending their 15-year relationship in 2023. The companies had experienced an acrimonious fallout, leaving millions of fans in China disappointed. The new deal will see the return of games in the Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and StarCraft universes, in addition to “World of Warcraft.” The games are set to make a sequential return to the Chinese market beginning this summer.

Foreign publishers, like Blizzard, must work with local partners to offer video games in China. In November 2022, Blizzard and NetEase announced they would not renew licensing deals due to disagreements on key terms. However, after a year of negotiations, the companies have finally aligned on a path forward to bring back these popular games to the Chinese market. In addition to the collaboration between Blizzard and NetEase, Microsoft Gaming and NetEase have also entered an agreement to explore bringing new titles by the Chinese company to Xbox consoles following Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard.

The return of these iconic games to China is a significant development for gaming enthusiasts in the country who have long awaited their comeback after the fallout between Blizzard and NetEase in 2023. The gaming community in China has built a unique bond with these titles over the years, making their return an exciting prospect. The companies expressed their commitment to serving their users with mutual respect and trust, aiming to continue their partnership on a positive note.

China has recently implemented strict regulations on its online gaming industry in an effort to combat gaming addiction among young people. In 2021, the country imposed restrictions on the playing hours of online gamers under the age of 18, limiting their gameplay to just three hours most weekends and barring them from playing on weekdays. These regulations are part of Beijing’s wider crackdown on powerful companies, particularly in the tech industry, as the government seeks to control the influence of Big Tech companies.

The agreement between Blizzard, NetEase, and Microsoft Gaming to bring back these popular games to China demonstrates their commitment to serving the gaming community in the region while exploring opportunities to expand their offerings to players around the world. The return of Blizzard’s legendary games to the Chinese market is a significant development for gamers who have long awaited the opportunity to revisit these iconic titles. The companies are expected to share further details about the rollout and availability of the games in the coming months.

Overall, the rekindled partnership between Blizzard, NetEase, and Microsoft Gaming signifies a positive step in the gaming industry, particularly in China where strict regulations have been implemented in recent years. The return of popular titles to the Chinese market demonstrates the enduring appeal of these games and the commitment of the companies to serve their fans. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, partnerships between international and local companies will play a key role in shaping the future of gaming experiences for players worldwide.
