Blinken acknowledges ‘cost’ of months-long delay in aid to Ukraine

the delay in getting the supplementary budget request approved and equipment sent to Ukraine has had a cost, according to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. However, Blinken remains confident that Ukraine can hold the line in the east despite recent Russian troop offensives. The U.S. recently passed a $61 billion aid package, with a significant portion allocated for military aid to Ukraine. The Pentagon has announced plans to send $1 billion worth of weapons to Kyiv from U.S. stockpiles in response to the ongoing conflict. President Joe Biden authorized a $400 million defense aid package for Ukraine, which includes ammunition for air defenses and anti-aircraft missiles.

The passing of the U.S. aid bill in the House of Representatives was met with relief in Ukraine and among its allies, but frustration remains over the political infighting that caused delays. Ukraine lost the key frontline city of Avdiivka in February due to ammunition shortages during the six-month wait for assistance. Blinken acknowledges the challenges faced by Ukraine and assures that efforts are being made to rush aid to the country. The support from the U.S. and over 50 countries for Ukraine is unwavering, and Blinken asserts that Russia’s aggression will not prevail in the long run.

The $61 billion U.S. aid package includes military assistance for Ukraine, with plans to send $1 billion worth of weapons to Kyiv. The aid package includes various defense systems and ammunition to strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities in the ongoing conflict with Russia. President Biden’s authorization of a $400 million defense aid package for Ukraine further demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. and its allies to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Blinken emphasizes that the support for Ukraine will continue and that Russia’s attempts to outlast Ukraine and its supporters will not succeed.

Despite the setbacks caused by political delays, the passing of the U.S. aid bill has provided much-needed relief to Ukraine and its allies. The urgency to send aid to Ukraine is clear, as the country continues to face Russian aggression in the east. The loss of Avdiivka underscores the significance of timely assistance in supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian forces. With support from the U.S. and other countries, Ukraine remains determined to hold the line and resist Russian aggression. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia highlights the importance of international support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
