Despite maintaining his innocence and claiming the charges were fabricated, Whelan remains in detention. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the resilience shown by both Gershkovich and Whelan in challenging circumstances. He called for an end to Russia’s practice of arbitrary detentions for political leverage and urged for the immediate release of both individuals.
Biden highlighted the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to free all Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad, including Gershkovich and Whelan. He emphasized that people should not be used as bargaining chips, condemning Russia’s actions and calling for their release.
