The New Orleans attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, acted alone and planted remote detonator explosives inside coolers in two nearby locations in the French Quarter just before driving a pickup truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s on Bourbon Street. President Biden stated that no one else was involved in the attack. Federal agents are investigating potential links to the Las Vegas explosion, also being probed as a terror attack, and have been urged to accelerate their efforts. Fourteen people were killed in the attack, and Jabbar died in a shootout with police. The FBI confirmed that Jabbar was the driver responsible for the New Orleans attack and stated they had no prior information about him before this incident.

New Orleans hospitals treated a total of 37 victims injured in the attack, but it is unclear how many have been discharged and the condition of those still hospitalized. Authorities had been investigating a potential military connection between Jabbar and the Las Vegas suspect identified as Matthew Livelsberger. The FBI is exploring all potential leads and not ruling anything out but has not found any definitive link between the New Orleans and Las Vegas attacks. Jabbar, a U.S. native born in Texas, had previously served in the military, and investigators are still looking into how and when he became radicalized.

During a news conference about judicial confirmations, President Biden confirmed that Jabbar planted the explosives before using a remote detonator in his vehicle to set off two ice chests. The FBI told congressional lawmakers they have zero information about Jabbar before the attack, and Jabbar claimed to be inspired by ISIS. However, investigators have not found any evidence that he was directed by the terrorist group. Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the attack and any potential connections to other incidents.

Biden directed federal agents to keep investigating potential links to the Las Vegas explosion while stating there was no evidence of such a connection so far. The FBI is exploring all leads and possibilities to determine the full extent of Jabbar’s actions and any potential connections he may have had with other suspects. The FBI also identified Jabbar as the lone attacker in the New Orleans incident and confirmed that he had no prior history before the attack. Authorities are continuing to gather information and investigate how and when Jabbar became radicalized.

It is unclear how many of the injured have been discharged or the conditions of those still hospitalized. Investigators had been looking into a potential military connection between Jabbar and the Las Vegas suspect, Matthew Livelsberger, but have not found a definitive link between the two incidents. The FBI is working to piece together the events leading up to the attack and understand the motivations behind Jabbar’s actions.
