Biden highlights NATO expansion and Middle East involvement at West Point graduation

President Joe Biden delivered a commencement address to the West Point graduating class, highlighting the expansion of NATO, his actions in the Middle East, and progress in lowering military sexual assaults. He emphasized the importance of defending democracy in America, stating that each generation has an obligation to protect and preserve it. Biden reiterated the US’ support for Ukraine and praised NATO as the greatest defense alliance in history, stronger than ever, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Despite not mentioning former President Donald Trump or making an appeal to voters ahead of the November election, Biden drew a sharp contrast with his Republican rival by underscoring values such as democracy and the NATO alliance. He commended the US military for its work in building a temporary pier off the shore of Gaza to increase aid to Palestinians, following aid groups distributing humanitarian assistance this week. The president also navigated a delicate balancing act over his support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas, acknowledging the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the impact on young people.

During his address, Biden promised to use force to protect the nation if needed, citing his ordering of drone strikes against Iranian-backed militants after the killing of three US service members in January. He also addressed the issue of sexual harassment in the military, stating that every member of the armed forces must be safe and respected. Biden praised the reduction in reported incidents of sexual assault and harassment in the military, emphasizing the need to end the scourge of sexual violence once and for all.

The president’s speech comes as he continues to navigate international tensions and conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He praised the US military’s support for Ukraine and highlighted the strength of NATO in the face of Russian aggression. Biden’s address at West Point followed a commencement speech at Morehouse College where he appealed to Black voters and recognized the anguish felt by young people over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As Biden continues to address national security and military issues, he reaffirms his commitment to protecting American troops and delivering justice to those who target them. He emphasizes the importance of ending sexual violence in the military and notes the decrease in reported incidents of sexual assault and harassment. The president’s focus on defending democracy, supporting allies, and promoting respect within the military reflects his administration’s priorities in foreign policy and national security.
