Biden highlights decrease in crime rates and criticizes GOP handling of gun violence in press briefing on Thursday

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris recently announced new executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence and held a press conference to discuss the administration’s focus on this issue. Biden emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence, particularly as it relates to the safety of children, and criticized previous comments from Republican lawmakers. He also highlighted the administration’s efforts to reduce violent crime overall, citing statistics that show a decrease in murder rates and other violent crimes in recent years.

During the press conference, Biden announced new executive actions targeting “emerging” firearms threats, such as unserialized “ghost guns” and machine-gun conversion devices. He also revealed plans to establish a task force to address these issues and improve school preparedness for active shooter incidents. Additionally, Biden directed his Cabinet members to provide resources and information for schools to enhance active shooter drills and communicate more effectively with parents. The administration’s focus on gun violence prevention has been a key priority for the Biden-Harris team, with Biden criticizing Republicans for attempting to defund the Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

Vice President Harris also spoke at the press conference and reiterated her support for a nationwide assault weapons ban and other gun control measures, such as universal background checks and red-flag laws. Both Harris and Biden criticized the gun lobby and gun manufacturers, calling for increased accountability in instances of gun violence. They emphasized the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring safe storage of firearms to help prevent tragedies caused by gun violence.

Critics of Biden’s executive orders argue that they are an attempt to distract from his administration’s record on reducing crime in major cities. They claim that the orders lack substance and are heavy on rhetoric, suggesting that Americans do not feel safe under the Biden-Harris administration. The NRA Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director Randy Kozuch expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the executive orders and argued that Americans are increasingly purchasing firearms for self-defense in response to rising crime rates.

Despite criticism from gun control opponents, Biden and Harris remain committed to addressing gun violence and implementing measures to prevent tragedies involving firearms. The administration’s focus on enhancing school safety, improving active shooter drills, and addressing new firearms threats like “ghost guns” reflects a broader effort to reduce violence and promote public safety. Biden and Harris continue to advocate for gun control measures, such as safe storage laws and increased mental health resources in schools, while also pushing for greater accountability for the gun industry in addressing gun violence.
