Biden expresses regret to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for delay in military aid: “We stand with you”

President Biden publicly apologized to Ukraine for the holdup in American military assistance that allowed Russia to make gains on the battlefield. He reassured the Ukrainian people that the American people are standing by them for the long haul and pledged continued support. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy appealed for bipartisan U.S. support and thanked lawmakers for approving a weapons package that has helped Ukraine stem Russian advances. He emphasized the importance of U.S. support in standing with Ukraine shoulder to shoulder, particularly in the face of Russia’s invasion.

The U.S. is Ukraine’s biggest supplier of wartime support, and Ukraine is currently facing an intense Russian offensive in eastern regions. The offensive is seeking to exploit Kyiv’s shortages of ammunition and troops, which resulted from a six-month holdup of U.S. military aid in Congress. In response to Russia’s recent onslaught, the U.S. will be sending about $225 million in military aid to Ukraine, including munitions for rocket systems, mortar systems, artillery rounds, and air defense systems. Some NATO allies, including the U.S., have also allowed Ukraine to use weapons to carry out limited attacks inside Russia.

At a meeting in Paris, Zelenskyy drew a parallel between Ukraine’s current fight against Russian aggression and the sacrifices made during World War II. He emphasized the importance of standing with Ukraine in defense against Russia’s invasion and expressed gratitude for supporters like France, which has provided Mirage combat aircraft to Ukraine. Zelenskyy’s foreign trips aim to highlight Ukraine’s plight, secure more military help, and lock in long-term Western support through bilateral alliances. France and Ukraine have signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement, and Zelenskyy has signed similar agreements with other European countries.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is framed as a clash between Western democratic freedom and Russian tyranny. Russia claims to be defending itself against NATO’s eastward expansion. Zelenskyy’s speech at the French National Assembly emphasized the pivotal nature of the current battle and the need to write history in a way that benefits Ukraine. The support of European allies and the commitment of the U.S. to stand by Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression underscore the international significance of the conflict. The U.S. has made efforts to provide timely military aid to Ukraine to help counter Russian advances and maintain stability in the region.
