Biden Criticizes Netanyahu’s Actions in Gaza, Calls Attack on Aid Workers ‘Outrageous’

In a recent interview, President Joe Biden expressed his disagreement with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing attacks in Gaza, calling it a mistake and stating that he does not agree with his approach. This represents a significant shift in U.S. policy towards Israel, particularly in light of the high civilian casualties resulting from the conflict with Hamas. The White House had previously avoided direct criticism of Netanyahu’s actions but changed its stance following the deaths of seven aid workers in an Israeli airstrike. Biden has warned Netanyahu that future U.S. support will depend on the protection of civilians and has called for a cease-fire to address the humanitarian crisis.

The president reiterated his calls for a cease-fire in the interview, emphasizing the need for unrestricted access to food and medicine for the people in Gaza. He condemned the targeting of aid workers by drones and urged Israel to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need immediately. Biden mentioned that the U.S. had secured commitments from other countries in the region to provide assistance and criticized the delays in addressing the urgent medical and food requirements of the affected population. Israel responded to Biden’s call by opening a border crossing in northern Gaza for the first time since the conflict began on Oct. 7.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that Hamas must accept a new cease-fire agreement proposed by the U.S., which includes the release of hostages. However, Hamas has not yet responded to the proposal, with U.S. officials expressing disappointment with the group’s public statements. Biden also took the opportunity to criticize his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, whom he considers the greatest threat to the nation. He pointed to Trump’s actions during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection, where he allegedly watched the events unfold without taking appropriate action and later referred to the attackers as political heroes, behavior that Biden views as unprecedented and dangerous.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has drawn international attention, with Biden’s comments reflecting a growing concern over the humanitarian crisis and civilian casualties resulting from the violence. The president’s calls for a cease-fire and immediate access to essential supplies for the affected population highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. By criticizing Netanyahu’s approach and warning of consequences for disregarding civilian protection, Biden is signaling a shift in U.S. policy towards Israel and a renewed focus on addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The response from Hamas to the proposed cease-fire agreement will be crucial in determining the next steps in efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Overall, President Biden’s remarks in the Univision interview underscore his commitment to prioritizing the protection of civilians in conflict zones and holding leaders accountable for their actions. By condemning the targeting of aid workers and urging immediate access to essential supplies for the people of Gaza, Biden is emphasizing the need for humanitarian assistance and calling for an end to the violence. The president’s criticism of former President Trump’s response to the Capitol insurrection also reflects his concern for the state of democracy and the rule of law in the United States. As the conflict in Gaza continues, Biden’s stance on the issue will likely continue to evolve in response to developments on the ground and diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting cease-fire agreement.
