Biden calls on Egypt and Qatar to urge Hamas to negotiate and release Israeli hostages in Gaza

President Joe Biden is taking steps to urge leaders in Egypt and Qatar to press Hamas for a hostage deal with Israel. This comes after Biden’s call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to work towards a cease-fire in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The administration is focused on negotiating a pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas to facilitate an exchange of hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners in Israel. The goal is to secure the release of around 100 hostages, including American citizens, who are believed to still be held in Gaza.

Biden has emphasized the importance of securing the release of hostages during his conversations with Netanyahu. The first phase of the proposed deal aims to secure the release of women, elderly, sick, and wounded hostages. White House officials are calling for urgent action to address the situation as the hostages have been held for nearly six months in dire conditions. Negotiating a temporary cease-fire and facilitating the exchange of hostages is seen as the only way to boost the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Despite expressing optimism for a temporary cease-fire and a hostage deal during the runup to Ramadan, an agreement has not yet materialized. The U.S. president has urged Israel to reach an immediate cease-fire in exchange for the release of hostages without delay. Biden has also expressed frustration with Israel’s prosecution of the war in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians. The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has been described as one of the deadliest and most destructive in recent history, with significant civilian casualties.

The White House is working to facilitate negotiations for a deal that would benefit both the hostages and the prisoners. Biden’s administration is engaging with key leaders in the region, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Qatar’s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to push for progress in the negotiations. CIA Director Bill Burns has been deployed to Cairo for talks about the hostage crisis, underscoring the administration’s commitment to resolving the situation and bringing the hostages home.

Efforts to secure the release of hostages are gaining momentum as Biden continues to engage with regional leaders and push for a resolution to the conflict. The administration is hopeful that a temporary cease-fire and a hostage deal can be reached to alleviate the suffering of those held in Gaza. As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the United States is working diligently to address the humanitarian crisis and bring an end to the violence that has plagued the region for months.
