Biden and Netanyahu to have first conversation since deadly Israeli attack on World Central Kitchen convoy

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to speak for the first time since an Israeli strike in Gaza killed seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen charity, including one American. The strike has sparked international condemnation, with Biden expressing outrage and heartbreak over the incident. Israeli officials have claimed that the strike was unintentional and a mistake, while the head of World Central Kitchen, José Andrés, has accused Israel of deliberately targeting the charity workers, stating that the organization had been communicating their workers’ movements to the Israeli Defense Forces.

Andrés believes that the vehicles of the aid workers were targeted systematically by Israel, contrary to claims that it was a grave mistake. In response to Andrés’ accusations, Nir Barkat, Israel’s economy minister, has dismissed his comments as nonsense, reiterating that the strike was unintentional and for which Israel is terribly sorry. Despite Biden’s outrage, the U.S. has no plans to conduct an independent investigation into the strike, leaving it to the Israelis to carry out a comprehensive investigation. The Biden administration is committed to continuing to have tough conversations with its Israeli counterparts regarding the incident and the broader relationship between the two countries.

The deadly strike has further strained the already tense relationship between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu. The cancellation of an Israeli delegation visit to Washington and recent disagreements over Israel’s actions in Gaza have underscored the growing rift between the two leaders. Biden has criticized Netanyahu for not doing enough to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza, while Netanyahu has defended his actions, leading to a public exchange of conflicting viewpoints. Despite this tension, both countries have emphasized the importance of maintaining their strategic alliance and close cooperation in the face of ongoing challenges in the region.

The incident involving the Israeli strike in Gaza has highlighted the complexities of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, with both sides continuing to engage in military actions and clashes. The U.S. has reiterated its support for Israel’s right to defend itself against threats and attacks, while also calling for restraint and efforts to de-escalate the situation. The ongoing violence in the region has resulted in civilian casualties and humanitarian crises, further complicating the prospects for peace and stability in the area.

President Biden’s response to the Israeli strike reflects his administration’s commitment to upholding human rights and accountability in international conflicts. Despite not initiating an independent investigation, the U.S. has called for a swift and comprehensive inquiry by the Israeli authorities to determine the circumstances of the incident. The tragic loss of life in Gaza underscores the need for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law in their military actions. As the U.S. continues to engage with Israel and other stakeholders in the region, efforts to address the root causes of the conflict and promote peace and security remain essential goals for the Biden administration.
