Bernard Hill, known for Titanic and Lord of the Rings, passes away shortly before highly anticipated television comeback

Bernard Hill, best known for his roles in Titanic and Lord of the Rings, passed away at the age of 79 just hours before the premiere of his new TV show on BBC One. Hill’s career spanned various iconic roles, including Captain Edward Smith in Titanic and King Theoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also famously portrayed Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff, marking his breakthrough into acting. The news of Hill’s death was confirmed by his agent, Lou Coulson. Hill was set to make his return to television in the second series of The Responder, a BBC drama starring Martin Freeman.

Tributes poured in on social media following the announcement of Hill’s passing, with fans and colleagues celebrating his impactful performances throughout his career. Known for his portrayal of Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff, Hill’s work was widely regarded as powerful and influential.
