Ben Baldanza, former CEO of Spirit Airlines, passed away at the age of 62 after battling ALS. Born in Rome, New York, in 1961, he began his career in the airline industry in 1986 with American Airlines, where he held finance and revenue management roles during a time of industry deregulation and innovation. Alongside other accomplished executives, Baldanza contributed to the success of American Airlines in the golden age of the industry.

Baldanza also held roles at various other airlines, but his impact was most significant during his time as CEO of Spirit Airlines. When he took on the role in 2005, the carrier was facing significant losses. Under his leadership, Spirit transitioned into an ultra-low-cost airline, with Baldanza pioneering the modern ultra-low-cost model in the U.S. that influenced other carriers such as Frontier, Allegiant, Avelo, and Breeze. By slashing fares and introducing ancillary fees, Baldanza transformed Spirit into one of the most profitable airlines in the U.S.

Despite Spirit’s success, the carrier faced criticism from customers due to its bare-bones service and unconventional advertising campaigns. Baldanza was unapologetic, often likening Spirit to the “Big Yellow Bus of the Skies.” He embraced the controversy, using provocative ads to draw attention to the airline’s low fares and unique business model. However, his strategies paid off, with Spirit’s success leading legacy airlines to adopt similar ultra-low-cost models.

Following his departure from Spirit in 2016, Baldanza continued to make an impact in the industry through board roles at JetBlue and Six Flags, as well as serving as an adjunct professor in economics at George Mason University. He also co-hosted the “Airlines Confidential” podcast with Scott McCartney, where they interviewed industry executives and discussed industry news. Baldanza’s involvement in various facets of the industry showcased his deep knowledge and passion for aviation.

Tragically, Baldanza was diagnosed with ALS in 2022, forcing him to step away from the podcast and other roles. He leaves behind his wife, son, and siblings, as well as a lasting legacy in the airline industry. Baldanza’s contributions to aviation, particularly in pioneering the ultra-low-cost business model, have had a lasting impact on the industry landscape. His innovative approach and fearless leadership have left an indelible mark on the airline industry, making him a true pioneer and disruptor in the field.
