Stunt performer Ben Jenkin shares two important tips for being burned alive in a movie scene: don’t breathe in the flame and keep moving to control the fire. Stunt work has been essential in Hollywood since the early days, with performers often doubling for stars to execute dangerous sequences. Director David Leitch’s film “The Fall Guy” celebrates the contributions of stunt performers to the movie industry and advocates for more recognition of their work.

Stunt designer Chris O’Hara, who worked on “The Fall Guy,” emphasizes the creativity and skill required in crafting elaborate sequences. The film showcases a variety of stunts, ranging from car chases to fire burns, highlighting the versatility and talent of the stunt performers. The push for a new Oscar category for stunt performance reflects a growing awareness of the important role stunt work plays in the success of movies across genres.

David Leitch, a former stuntman turned director, has become a prominent figure in action filmmaking, with projects like “Atomic Blonde” and “Deadpool 2” under his belt. “The Fall Guy,” based on a TV series from the 1980s, offers a look at the behind-the-scenes world of stunt work and the relationships that develop on set. Ryan Gosling stars as a veteran stuntman in the film, which also includes a touch of autobiography for Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, who run their own production company.

At the premiere of “The Fall Guy,” Ryan Gosling revealed that he did not perform his own stunts in the film, leaving the action sequences to experienced stuntmen like Ben Jenkin and Logan Holladay. These stunt performers showcase their skills in various high-risk scenarios, from cannon rolls of vehicles to jumping out of helicopters. The film highlights the adrenaline-fueled nature of stunt work and the dedication of those who risk their safety to bring thrilling scenes to life on screen.

The ongoing campaign for an Oscar category for stunts recognizes the invaluable contributions of stunt performers to the film industry. Stunt professionals make up a significant portion of the academy’s Production and Technology branch, underscoring their importance in the filmmaking process. For some stunt performers like Troy Brown, stunt work is a family tradition passed down from parents who were also involved in the industry. “The Fall Guy” pays homage to the courage and skill of stunt performers who bring excitement and danger to movie audiences worldwide.
