Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May approved a petition filed by the family and inner circle of Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson, establishing that Wilson should be placed in a court conservatorship due to a major neurocognitive disorder. Wilson’s wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, had handled most of his tasks and affairs, but with her passing in January, the need for a conservatorship became apparent. Two of Wilson’s children, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, requested to be added to a group text chain about their father and consulted on medical decisions, which was granted by the judge. Wilson’s conservators are publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard.
A doctor declared that Wilson has a major neurocognitive disorder, is taking medication for dementia, and is unable to provide for his own basic needs such as health care, food, clothing, or shelter. Despite these challenges, Wilson has agreed to the conservatorship arrangement and trusts the judgement of Sievers and Hard, who have had a long-standing relationship with Wilson and his late wife. The conservatorship was deemed necessary based on clear and convincing evidence of Wilson’s incapacity to make health care decisions.
Robert Frank Cipriano, an attorney appointed to represent Wilson’s interests, reported that Wilson lives in an impeccably maintained residence in Beverly Hills with two daughters and a long-term live-in caregiver. Although Wilson still possesses a sense of self and awareness of his surroundings, he struggles with communication and memory, often providing short responses to questions. The conservatorship was approved primarily due to Wilson’s general consent and need for assistance with his personal and medical needs.
Wilson’s family, including his seven children, caregiver, and doctors, were consulted before the conservatorship petition was filed, ensuring that Wilson’s best interests would be served. Unlike Britney Spears’ highly publicized case, Wilson’s conservatorship focuses on his personal well-being rather than his financial assets, which are held in a trust. As a legendary figure in the music industry, Wilson’s struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues have been well-documented, but he is also celebrated for his contributions as a co-founder, producer, and songwriter of the Beach Boys.
