Early Tuesday morning, a cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which crosses outer Baltimore Harbor. The U.S. Coast Guard received a report of the impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time. The ship involved was a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel named the Dali, which is 948 feet long. MarineTraffic, a maritime data platform, showed the Dali stopped directly under the bridge and leaving Baltimore at 1 a.m. bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The extent of the damage to the bridge was not immediately clear following the collision. Neither the Baltimore Police nor the Maryland Port Administration provided comment on the incident, and Mayor Brandon M. Scott’s office did not respond to requests for information. The Maryland Transportation Authority announced around 2 a.m. that all lanes on the bridge were closed in both directions due to an unspecified “incident,” and traffic was being detoured.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which opened in 1977, is named after the author of the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The closure of the bridge created disruptions in traffic flow, impacting commuters and travelers in the Baltimore area. The cause of the collision and the extent of the damage to both the ship and the bridge remain to be fully determined as the investigation into the incident continues.

As a developing story, updates on the situation are expected to provide further details on the aftermath of the cargo ship collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The incident raised concerns regarding the safety of maritime transportation and the infrastructure of the bridge. It also highlighted the need for prompt responses and effective communication from relevant authorities in managing emergency situations involving maritime accidents in busy harbor areas.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks and challenges associated with maritime transportation and the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place to prevent collisions and accidents. It also underscores the significance of coordination between different agencies and stakeholders involved in responding to and mitigating the impacts of such incidents. The aftermath of the collision will likely involve assessments of the damage, potential repairs to the bridge, and investigations into the causes of the accident.

Overall, the collision between the cargo ship and the Francis Scott Key Bridge in outer Baltimore Harbor raises questions about maritime safety, infrastructure maintenance, and emergency response protocols. The incident underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness in preventing accidents and minimizing their consequences in busy maritime environments. It also highlights the challenges faced by authorities in managing such incidents and the importance of effective communication and collaboration in ensuring a swift and coordinated response to emergencies in harbor areas.
